4 ways to stay positive during a divorce

Nobody claims that divorce is easy. In fact, you may feel like you are trying to navigate your way through a maze that doesn’t have a clear ending in sight as you struggle to separate your life (along with your assets and debts) from your spouse’s.

Since transitions are hard, it’s important to make sure that you find ways to keep your outlook upbeat. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Go ahead and grieve

Your divorce represents the end of the life you once envisioned for yourself, and you should take some time to grieve the loss of that dream. It’s okay to feel sad and scared about the future for a little while. Trying to bury those emotions can be more problematic than letting yourself go through them.

Recognize your physical needs

“Self-care” isn’t just a modern mantra, it’s a physical necessity. This is a good time to get into an exercise routine, whether that’s a 30-minute walk in the evening with your dog or a 20-minute yoga routine in the morning. Exercise has been shown to be a genuine mood booster

Set new goals

Once you’ve given yourself time to adjust to the loss of your prior life goals, it’s time to set some new ones. Spend some quality time just contemplating where you’d like to see yourself in one year (or five) and consider writing a “bucket list” that reflects your innermost desires for the future. That will give you a starting point for organizing your life and finding some motivation.

Lean into your support network

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Misery loves company?” Well, this is a good time to eschew the people in your life who want to dwell on the details of your divorce and spend your time with people who are focused on helping you live life to the fullest. When the positive people in your life reach out, accept their offers of help.

Embrace the routine

While you do want to start thinking about your future goals and plans, changing too much too fast can be detrimental to your mental health. While your divorce is still in process, embracing some routines can help you feel a sense of stability in your life even in the middle of chaos. It could be as simple as keeping your morning coffee routine or going to brunch with your friends every Sunday. There will be plenty of time to make changes later.

And remember, whatever your situation, seeking experienced legal guidance can make the divorce process much easier.
